A 61-year old man has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference against a male complainant under the age of 16.

David Smith appeared in North Battleford provincial court to face both charges this week. His latest appearance was on Tuesday before Judge Brent Klause, but the show cause hearing that was scheduled for that date has been adjourned to June 15 to allow Smith to line up counsel.

He remains in custody until then. The Crown opposes his release.

Smith was arrested following an investigation by North Battleford RCMP who, on May 7, received a complaint of a man giving cigarettes to underage people.

The investigation resulted in the sexual assault and sexual interference charges being laid. The RCMP is also expressing thanks to all those that assisted and who continue to assist in the investigation.
