EAST CENTRAL — Following new rules from the provincial government, the Horizon School Division has announced masks are required indoors for all students throughout the day.

The requirements include Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 3 students, who were previously exempt.

“These new masking policies from Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer apply to all indoor locations, including where we are able to socially distance,” said Kevin Garinger, the divisions’ director of education in a letter. “This means that students and staff are encouraged to keep masks on during all times of day, with the exception of when eating or drinking.”

Masks are not required outdoors.

School-based extracurricular activity has also been paused, starting Friday, Nov. 27.

“We will continue to review, with the hope of returning to some level of extracurricular opportunity as soon as possible in the new year,” Garinger said.

The division said it will continue with its other mitigating practices such as student cohorts, regular hand hygiene, sanitizing surfaces between use, and physical distancing.

“With this expansion of the provincial mask protocols, I know that we will see more of the same great work and adherence that we have seen so far this year,” Garinger said.
