Matt Fedler running for the NDP

New Democrats have turned to former amateur wrestler and professional MMA fighter Matt Fedler as their candidate in the Battlefords-Lloydminster by-election on Dec. 11. Matt was announced as the party’s candidate on Thursday night.

New Democrats have turned to former amateur wrestler and professional MMA fighter Matt Fedler as their candidate in the Battlefords-Lloydminster by-election on Dec. 11.

Matt was announced as the party’s candidate on Thursday night.

According to the bio posted on his Facebook page, Fedler was born in North Battleford and grew up in Wilkie.

He has been successful as an amateur wrestler and as an MMA fighter. He was Senior Ring at North Battleford Comp High School and also competed on the Vikings wrestling team. He went on to compete for the University of Regina, and briefly fought MMA professionally before turning to coaching.

He also has a background in the mental health field as a fulltime program coordinator with Canadian Mental Health Association.

Fedler, who is Metis, also describes himself as a strong proponent of indigenous rights.
