The current mayor of North Battleford has made it clear he wants to stay on the job for the next four years.

Ian Hamilton filed his nomination papers Monday at City Hall to officially kick off his campaign for a second term as mayor.

Hamilton was first elected to council in 2006 and won the mayor's chair in a 15-vote squeaker over Councillor Brad Pattinson in 2009.

In speaking to the News-Optimist Monday, Hamilton expressed his desire to continue the policies and the growth that the city experienced over the past six years.

"A lot of things are happening in North Battleford right now," said Hamilton. "I think we've accomplished an awful lot over the last five or six years, but there's more things to devote our attention to that are very necessary."

Among the issues Hamilton wants to devote his second term to include public safety.

"What I'm concerned about is safety in our community and I think it's very important we delve further into that."

Hamilton also sees progress on downtown revitalization as an important issue and notes those efforts are already underway.

"A lot of things are in the works down there," said Hamilton, noting "people are working strenuously and vigorously at that.

"That will be a high priority of mine going into a second term."

Hamilton also wants to see continued community planning and said his council followed through with a strategic plan during his term in office, assisting administration with the development of their work plans over the coming years. He also wants to see the City make progress on its Official Community Plan and "get that finalized and adopted."

Infrastructure remains a top priority for Hamilton. He says infrastructure funding is something he wants to pursue along with other city mayors in their discussions with the province.

"We're working hard as a mayor's caucus to work with the province to develop a long term determinable and sustainable funding model for infrastructure."

City recreational facilities are also a priority for Hamilton who is excited about the pending opening of the components of the Credit Union CUPlex over the coming weeks. "It's a very exciting time."

Hamilton also points to excitement around the city regarding the 2013 centennial.

"I really want to be a participant and leader of that as well," he said.
