Meeting Lake councillor facing four charges

A councillor in the Rural Municipality of Meeting Lake is facing a number of charges.

A councillor in the Rural Municipality of Meeting Lake is facing a number of charges.

Division 2 Councillor Earl Holmes was arrested in late November and now faces four charges; possession of cannabis/marijuana, impaired care and control of a motor vehicle, refusing to provide a breath test and careless use of a firearm.

Holmes made his first appearance in court Jan. 6, and his second appearance, Feb. 3, was adjourned for a plea until March 3 at 10 a.m. in the Blain Lake provincial court.

Sgt. John Redlich of the Blaine Lake RCMP detachment said the charges are of a concern to people in the community.

"Whether it's an elected official or a neighbour down the street, I'm sure we're all concerned when someone is accused with criminal activity of that nature," said Redlich.

The Regional Optimist has received an anonymous call and a fax from people claiming to be residents of the RM, both expressed concern that an elected official would be facing such charges and are asking for his immediate resignation.

Both the caller and the faxed letter expressed dismay the RM office would not comment on the matter or even acknowledge Holmes had been charged.

When contacted by the Regional Optimist, the RM of Meeting Lake administrator, who declined to provide her name, claimed to have no knowledge of the charges.

"I didn't know nothing about that," she said.
