Ministry of Environment issues fire ban for most of province

On Aug. 31, 2017, extreme wildfire hazards have caused the Wildfire Management Branch of the Ministry of Environment to issue a fire ban for most of the province south of the Churchill River.

On Aug. 31, 2017, extreme wildfire hazards have caused the Wildfire Management Branch of the Ministry of Environment to issue a fire ban for most of the province south of the Churchill River.

Effective immediately, all open fires are prohibited for all provincial Crown land and for provincial parks and recreation sites south of the Churchill River to the U.S. border.

No open fires or fireworks are permitted. The following are permitted: self-contained heating devices, pressurized stoves, gas barbecues, propane firepits, and charcoal briquettes used in an approved firebox.

The ban will be in place until conditions improve and the Ministry of Environment issues further notice.

 

The ban includes the following provincial parks and their surrounding recreation sites:

  • Blackstrap
  • Buffalo Pound
  • Candle Lake
  • Clarence-Steepbank Lakes
  • Crooked Lake
  • Cypress Hills
  • Danielson
  • Douglas
  • Duck Mountain
  • Echo Valley
  • Good Spirit Lake
  • Great Blue Heron
  • Greenwater Lake
  • Katepwa Point
  • Lac La Ronge
  • Makwa Lake
  • Meadow Lake
  • Moose Mountain
  • Narrow Hills
  • Pike Lake
  • Rowan’s Ravine
  • Saskatchewan Landing
  • Wildcat Hill
  • Cannington Manor
  • Cumberland House
  • Fort Carlton
  • Fort Pitt
  • Last Mountain House
  • Steele Narrows
  • St. Victor Petroglyphs
  • Touchwood Hills Post
  • Wood Mountain Post

Athabasca Sand Dunes and Clearwater River aren't included in the fire ban.
 

The fire ban does not affect the day-to-day operations of the parks.  The parks will be open and accepting visitors.
