He was the mayor of Melfort for five years and now he is expanding his political aspirations.
Kevin Phillips has lived in the Melfort constituency for nearly 30 years, working in business and advertising. He is currently taking a leave from his second term as mayor to run as the Sask Party candidate for the Melfort constituency in the upcoming provincial election.
"I enjoyed that (political) aspect, but was going to have this be my final term (in politics)," said Phillips. "When Rod (Gantefoer) had an illness and stepped away from the political life I looked at it as an opportunity."
Phillips said it is an exciting time for the Melfort constituency, with many great new opportunities presenting themselves.
He explained that the area is seeing a major population growth, from the south, part with the potash mines opening, to the east, where they are looking at natural gas discoveries.
"In the North part, I am looking at the Pehonan Hydro project which will be a First Nations project," said Phillips. "It will service as a hydro damn for electricity as well as be a river crossing,"
The main concern in the constituency is how to deal with the growth in the region, said Phillips.
"There is so much growth ready to happen," said Phillips. "Part of the job will be about dealing with that growth."
Phillips believes his time as mayor would help make him a good leader for the Melfort constituency.
"I have a very good working knowledge of the local municipalities," said Phillip.
If elected, he would work with them and help them to the best of his ability.
"The answer (to requests) is not always yes, but we will work together and find an answer that will work," said Phillips.
Not only would he like to work closely with his constituents, he is also proud to be part of the Sask Party.
"I am very proud of my leader," said Phillips. "I think he is somebody that Saskatchewan has a lot of respect for."
