The Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) Mohawks had a landslide win against the Tisdale Tornadoes with a score of 44-14 at Glenn Hall Park on Sept. 19.
Touchdowns were scored by quarterback Logan Seipp, Dawson Atamanchuk, Brady Sunderland, and Jacob Zimroz.
"I think the team played well and made the adjustments they needed to be successful," said head coach Cory Popoff.
Popoff is new to the position this year, though he said he was a head coach for "many years" before he moved to Humboldt, so it's not a completely new experience for him.
"I forgot how much work a head coach puts in organizing and getting stuff ready," he said, though he added that he is "blessed" to have a talented coaching staff.
There are seven members of the coaching staff this year, and new coaches include Jamie Zaluski (offensive line), Evan Nyhus (defensive assistant), and Tyler Bieber (offensive assistant). Popoff is also happy with the returning coaching staff members.
"We're very fortunate to have Mike Suchan," he saidl. "He has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the game of football."
Half of the Mohawks are new to football, but Popoff said that wasn't a disadvantage to them.
"Because our team is comprised of a lot of really good athletes, it compensates for it," he said. "They're also very fast learners and made coaching them quite easy."
Though the season is off to a good start, Popoff said it's too early to say how the rest of the season will go, especially as they're going to play two of the toughest opponents in the league - Melfort and Clavet. But he's not worried; he's going to take it game by game.
The Mohawks face Melfort at home on Sept. 26.
