One month after Melfort council decided to make changes to try to promote evening cab service, the city is making more tweaks to the taxicab bylaw.

The major change in the bylaw passed at the Feb. 13 meeting removes the requirement to turn on the taximeter as soon as a customer enters the cab, as most trips in the city are covered by a flat rate.

“The taxi cab driver brought it to our attention that, really, you don’t have to turn on the meter right away, as soon as you get in,” said Rick Lang, Melfort's mayor. “You need to turn it on when you are using it for a specific reason.”

That reason could include a stop made during a trip.

Other changes include allowing drivers to use cell phones instead of radios to communicate, increasing the rate of out of town trips by $1 to $10 plus $1.75 per kilometre and increasing the luggage rate by $1 to $3.

Lang said he hasn’t received any feedback about the bylaw changes made last month.
