The City of Humboldt has received a lot of feedback from residents in the last few months; from the tradeshow, to the Multiplex open house.

Communications Director, Jennifer Brooks, says that the concerns she gets through the many community channels the city has is very seasonal.

“In the spring, we have people worried about drainage, spring melt, pothole season...in winter, of course it’s things like snow removal, ice, and sanding on intersections.”

There are many channels available to city residents; including e-mail, phone, and social media.

Especially for special projects, the city wants input from city residents, says Brooks.

The P3A firm in charge of the Multiplex design and build catalogued the many different comments and surveys during the different information gathering sessions they put on during planning stages of the project.

Humboldt and area residents were very open to what they want to see in the new development and the architecture firm took note.

“Design the field house to accommodate all people, not JUST athletic people,” says one commenter, “many people trying to live healthier but don’t have good options when they are 30-60 years old.”

When it comes to noted concerns, people were open with their worries about cost, parking, and getting different community organizations to work together.

How the Uniplex expansion is going to affect the Elgar Petersen Arena was also a concern for one commenter.

“The arena is getting too hard to access,” they said, “EPA will still see the highest usage of these venues.”

Humboldt Cultural Services also received a lot of feedback when they did a cultural survey back when the current Gallery was still very new.

Three hundred people did a survey online or filled out a paper copy about what kinds of arts and culture things they would like brought into Humboldt. The majority of the results were positive, says Humboldt and District Museum and Gallery Director, Jennifer Hoesgen.

For the most part, people were interested in traditional art, says Hoesgen.

Photography, painting, and drawing seem to be the most popular, but there was some interest in the non-traditional forms of arts, as well.

“We asked if there were other suggestions and people were full of suggestions. We got things ranging from animation, leather work, open mic nights, improv classes, cartoons.”

People were focused on the visual arts, says Hoesgen, but performing art interests like concerts were also high on Humboldt’s priorities.
