An Onion Lake Cree Nation woman charged with killing a 26-year-old man was scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court but the matter was adjourned again.
Shari Heathen, 27, had an appearance scheduled on Aug. 20 to speak to the matter. She is charged with second-degree murder in connection to the death of Braeden Alfred James Sparvier.
According to Turtleford RCMP, Sparvier’s body was found east of St. Walburg in the R.M. of Frenchman Butte on Jan. 1, 2020. Onion Lake RCMP and specialized RCMP units assisted in the investigation, which determined that Sparvier’s death was a homicide.
Sparvier was born and raised in Regina. He moved to Onion Lake Cree Nation with family in his late teens.
An obituary for Sparvier described him as “selfless and (he) put everyone first.” It went on to say that he was “so loving, kind, gentle and happy. He had a smile that would light up any room and he had the most contagious laugh.”
A wake was held for Sparvier Jan. 6 and a funeral service on Jan. 8, both on Onion Lake Cree Nation.
Heathen was arrested and charged with his murder
in Prince Albert on July 16, 2020, after a lengthy investigation by Major Crimes Unit North.
RCMP say the investigation into Sparvier’s death is ongoing and they encourage anyone with information to call Turtleford RCMP at 306-845-4520. Information may also be submitted anonymously to Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submitting a tip online at www.saskcrimestoppers.com.
Heathen is now scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court Sept. 14 to speak to the matter.
