SGI is reporting over 200 impaired drivers were charged in the public safety blitz Operation Overdrive during the month of December.

During the month-long operation, according to their news release Jan. 4, law and traffic enforcement officers checked more than 8,600 vehicles and issued 2,416 tickets.

Charges included 217 impaired driving, 188 roadside suspensions, 621 for aggressive driving, 133 for improper or non-seatbelt use, 46 for cellphone use while driving, 41 for open alcohol in a vehicle and 1,170 other tickets were issued.

Operation Overdrive is part of the effort to promote and enforce traffic safety in the province.

Previously, a two-day Operation Overdrive traffic blitz was conducted in December 2011 resulting in 4,200 vehicles being checked by law enforcement officers and 241 tickets issued. A total of 25 people were charged with impaired driving in that blitz.
