RCMP locate and arrest man charged in Red Earth Cree Nation stabbing

Carrot River RCMP and the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit South thank again the public and the media for their help.

UPDATE 1: On Aug. 23, Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit South identified and charged a man for the stabbing and death of Brett Mckay two days ago in Red Earth Cree Nation.

21-year-old Richard Flett has been charged with second-degree murder. A warrant for his arrest has been issued.

Carrot River RCMP and Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit South continue to need assistance from the public, this time in locating the accused.

He is described as an Indigenous young man of slender build. He is approximately 6 feet tall and weighs approximately 160 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information concerning the whereabouts of Richard Flett is asked to call Carrot River RCMP at 306-768-1200. Information can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submitting a tip online at www.saskcrimestoppers.com.

Richard Flett is considered dangerous. If you see him, call the police and do not approach him.

BACKGROUND: On Aug. 21, at approximately 5:45 a.m., Carrot River RCMP responded to the report of a male who had been stabbed. The male was at a house in Red Earth Cree Nation.

Upon arrival, Carrot River RCMP officers found an unresponsive male, later identified as Brett McKay, who had been stabbed. He was declared deceased at the scene by EMS.

Initial police investigation reveals that 24 year-old Brett McKay was at a large social gathering in an open area, locally referred to as “the reservoir,” in Red Earth Cree Nation during the early morning of Friday, Aug. 21, and that he was driven to a house in Red Earth Cree Nation, injured, that same morning. 

Carrot River RCMP and Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit South need assistance from the public. Police are asking individuals who saw what happened during that early morning to please come forward and contact police. Finding out what happened to Brett McKay is the priority.
