City administration assured council Monday that safeguards have been put in place after missed water tests landed the City in court.

The City of North Battleford pled guilty in court May 22 to failure to operate its waterworks according to its permit.

Monday, Councillor Ryan Bater asked about any processes that might have changed as a result.

Public Works Director Stewart Schafer explained that now a sheet has been put up in the basement of the water tech office as well as at the water treatment plants that states which tests have been done and has the person doing the tests signing off on them and giving the dates when they were done.

"It can be viewed by all walking past the offices," said Schafer.

City Manager Jim Puffalt adds the city is completing an audit to make sure no further tests are missed and to find out what changes are needed to the testing procedure.

The charge stemmed from March 30, 2012 to Aug. 1, 2013, when some tests for certain chemicals in the water were missed.

Biological tests were conducted the entire time, however, and there was never a safety issue with respect to the water. Nevertheless, the Crown explained the charge was laid to bring home the importance of proper record keeping, and the City was assessed a $3,500 fine and a $1,400 surcharge.
