SHAND — The Shand Fair, put on by the Shand Agricultural Society, comes back this year.

The fair includes a cattle show, horse judging, hall exhibits, petting zoo, climbing wall and children’s games.

“[It’s] basically the same as last year,” said Sheryl Shiplack, secretary-treasurer of the society. “I mean we’re in our 87th year this year, that’s a celebration of one of the longest running fairs.”

Despite it being the 87th, they don’t see themselves doing anything different this year, but rather keeping with the classic exhibits.

To Shiplack, the people should come out to connect with the community.

“To acquaint themselves with their family and friends, to see what a country fair is all about,” Shiplack said.

“I think it brings in tourism, it brings in family members, it’s a get-together.”

Shiplack’s own favorite part of the fair is looking forward to getting to see people at the fair she only sees about once a year.

The ag society doesn’t make much from the fair itself.

“Enough to cover costs, it’s not a money-making thing,” Shiplack said.“It covers the cost of the fair, and the prize money and ribbons, and things like that.”

The fair runs on Aug. 8, starting with a pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m.
