Three summer interns in Northern Saskatchewan’s forestry industry have received a dream opportunity to blog about their involvement through the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) annual summer internships contest.

FPAC announced the annual winners of its 2020 Green Dream Bloggers on June 30 with Ty Edwards and Jace Timmer of Tolko Forest Products in Meadow Lake and Jordan Rock from Tolko Forest Products in Prince Albert being selected from forestry interns from across the country. Scholarship winners will have the chance to blog about their forestry experience as well as receive a cash prize to support their education.

This is Timmer’s second year as a summer student with Tolko and, having grown up in Meadow Lake, the 19-year-old has always been connected to the forestry industry, starting with Tolko and  their Youth Recruitment Program.

“Right now I’m working on major expenditures writing requests for money on things that are outside of the budgets. Honestly doing business work within the forestry industry. I get to grow as a professional while I’m still in school which is pretty good for a summer student.”

Timmer is currently a business student at Mount Royal University in Calgary and playing on the Mount Royal Cougars Men’s Volleyball team. He hopes to be able to use his degree in the forestry industry, he says.

“It has literally been all I’ve ever done so it has provided me financial support, rising opportunities with scholarships like the green dream scholarship. It’s really been great.”

This is Rock’s first summer with Tolko following the completion of the Integrated Resource Management program at Sask Polytechnic in Prince Albert. Rock will now be working towards his environmental biology degree at the University of Regina in the fall.

This summer has been an enjoyable learning experience for Rock as he about all the different aspects of the Saskatchewan forestry industry. Rock is hoping to inspire other young people with his blog posts.

“If I could stay working forestry and find a career I would do it in a heartbeat… my goal (when I entered the FPAC contest) was if I was chosen to share my experience this summer with everyone in hopes of inspiring anyone following a similar path to me to get into forestry.”

The Green Dream Bloggers program has been going since 2013 in order for interns to promote the forestry industry, and “not only provides development opportunities for young Canadians and raises awareness of the different jobs in our industry, but it also showcases in real-time how we are sustainably managing our forests and the innovative and environmentally-friendly products being manufactured at Canadianmills,” said FPAC President and CEO Derek Nighbor in their announcement press release.
