Surgical procedures were underway Tuesday morning at Lloydminster Hospital following a disruption in those services Monday after damage to the hospital’s air supply system from Friday night’s torrential downpour.
Six endoscopies cancelled from Monday’s surgical slate are the first to be done, followed by those previously scheduled for Tuesday. The general surgeries and cataract operations cancelled for yesterday are being rescheduled as quickly as possible so that patients do not experience undue delays in care and treatment.
Surgical services became available again at Lloydminster Hospital around 5 p.m. Monday, June 12 thanks to installation of a temporary separate air supply line that restored air intake to the hospital’s Operating Rooms (ORs). Labour and delivery services for expectant women who may require Caesarian sections (C-sections) are also available again and the ambulance bypass for patients that would require surgeries was rescinded. No surgeries were required to be performed in the Lloydminster Hospital OR overnight.
Efforts are continuing  to restore air conditioning to the hospital. Two temporary cooling units and generators to operate them were to arrive on site Tuesday afternoon, with installation to begin immediately. They are expected to be up and running in the next day or so.
More equipment will be arriving Thursday to dehumidify and desiccate the hospital’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system that bore the brunt of the problem when Friday’s deluge flooded the hospital’s boiler room, backing up water into the drains and main air supply system, including major air supply ducts. The flooding impacted the hospital’s ability to maintain fresh air supply and temperature control throughout the building.
In the meantime, all other patient services are continuing as usual though patients, visitors and staff at Lloydminster Hospital may continue to find the facility somewhat uncomfortable until the HVAC system is fully restored. Cleanup and testing of the system will continue over the days ahead to ensure patient and staff safety from possible contaminants when the units return to operation. The HVAC system is anticipated to be fully operational again later next week.
“We continue to ask for your patience and understanding as we work to restore our systems and environment to safe normal functioning. Thank you for your cooperation,” said Derek Miller, Prairie North Health Region Vice-President of Finance and Operations.
