SaskTel is reminding customers across Saskatchewan that 10-digit dialing is coming to the province this year.

Ten-digit dialing, using the area code plus the seven-digit number, is to be required for all calls beginning May 11. Those include not only long-distance calls but local calls as well.

The move is prompted by the introduction of a new area code 639 in Saskatchewan in addition to the 306 commonly used now.

The transition to the new 10-digit system is now on and SaskTel has issued a news release saying they have now enabled their network to accommodate ten-digit local dialing. Between Feb. 25 and May 11, SaskTel customers who dial seven digits when placing a local call will receive a message informing them they must add the area code in future calls.

SaskTel will then complete the call up automatically until the May 11 date. On and after that date, any seven-digit call will have to be re-dialed to include the area code.

SaskTel is urging customers to take their own steps to prepare for the transition to 10-digit dialing. They suggest updating programmed numbers by ensuring an area code is included in their telecommunications equipment, such as home phones, cell phones, fax machines, modems, equipment for the hearing impaired and home security systems.

SaskTel also urges customers to make the appropriate changes to their calling features such as speed dial, call forwarding and call blocking, and begin providing their 10-digit phone number in all instances where they need to provide a contact number such as for personal cheques, medical forms, stationary, business cards or insurance forms.

Businesses should also make the necessary changes to their telecommunications equipment, as well as their advertising, signing and websites to list their full ten-digit number.

Customers should know current phone numbers will not change. Long distance calling (1+area code +phone number) will remain the same. As well, numbers such as 911, 611 and 411 will continue to be three-digit numbers and will not be affected.

SaskTel says once the area code 639 is introduced, the 306 and 639 area codes will be assigned to new phone numbers interchangeably throughout the province.
