The Humboldt Trails Committee celebrated the resurfacing of its wildlife trail with a small gathering on Oct. 21.
Barb Smith, chair of the Trails Committee, Ken Mycock with the Wildlife Federation, and Andrew Excelby with Communities in Bloom and Agrium spoke at the grand opening of the importance of the trail.
It took about two to three weeks to finish resurfacing the trail with crushed gravel. This means the trail, which is five kilometres long and ends at the Humboldt Area Vintage and Antique Club, is easier to walk on for people trying to get some exercise.
"It was uneven and there were potholes and some culverts that needed to be replaced so all that has been done," Smith said.
Agrium provided a grant for the project and the Humboldt Wildlife Federation provided use of the trail for the committee to use as part of the eventual trails system.
"We approached (the Wildlife Federation) to include it as part of our trails and they were very interested in partnering with us," Smith said. " We both share the vision of the trail for hikers, walkers and mountain bikers, preserving the wildlife and the natural state of the land."
The trails committee hopes to eventually develop 20 kilometres of trails inside and outside the city.
"It's going to add a lot for all our visitors and the citizens of Humboldt so that they actually have a place to go and get out of the city on a nice day like this," Smith said. "I think people are looking for things like that nowadays."
