HUMBOLDT — Humboldt residents will soon have access to walk-in counselling services.

Partners Family Services will start the service in mid-April.

“People can drop in for free services without an appointment and the services are provided by qualified counselors,” said Hayley Kennedy, Partners’ executive director.

The service can help people with a wide range of issues, including stress, depression, anxiety, family conflict and urgent needs. It can also connect their patients to other community health services if it’s found that’s something they might need.

Walk-in counselling services will be offered in 23 communities across Saskatchewan this year, done by agencies that are under the umbrella of Family Service Saskatchewan. The provincial government is providing $1.2 million for the effort, with Humboldt getting $100,000 a year.

This is the first time such a service has come to Humboldt, but Partners is one of five agencies that have run pilot projects, with one in Wynyard and another in Wakaw. Family Service Saskatchewan said uptake for the service has been outstanding.

“The evaluation actually showed that when people have immediate access to these kind of services, they can begin to feel better in just one session,” Kennedy said.

The executive director said Partners will be hiring a new person to deliver work in walk-in counselling services.

More details about the new service will be revealed as Partners gets closer to starting it up, Kennedy said.

“We'll be sending out more information to our website and social media with those drop-in dates and what exactly it looks like to access that service.”
