One person is dead and a driver is in police custody following a two-vehicle collision that took place Thursday afternoon just behind North Battleford Comprehensive High School.

Alcohol is said to be a factor in the collision, which saw the full response of WPD Ambulance, North Battleford Fire Department and the RCMP at around 1 p.m.

One of the victims was taken out of a vehicle on a stretcher and transported by ambulance to hospital with undisclosed injuries.

A sheet was placed over top of the deceased victim by emergency personnel. However, the News-Optimistnoticed the “deceased” take the sheet off shortly after EMS left the scene.

It was, in fact, all an act.

The mock accident was part of the annual EMS week activities in the Battlefords and was staged by WPD Ambulance.

The “victims” were members of the drama department at the high school. But the response of emergency personnel and the teamwork shown by the various agencies was typical of what one would normally see at the scene of an accident.

The consequences of drinking and driving were also all too real, especially given some fatalities that have taken place north of the city in recent years due to drunk driving.

The point was made to the students watching the display to act responsibly and to choose not to drink and drive during graduation ceremonies or throughout this summer.
