The Macklin Mohawks are awaiting the winner of the Wilkie Outlaws-Hafford Hawks series in the Sask West Hockey League.
The Outlaws and Hawks are deadlocked 1-1 going into play this week. That semifinal series is now tied after the Hawks prevailed 5-4 on Friday night.
In that game Kyle Lichtenwald opened the scoring on the power play in the first. After Andrew Herle tied it up, Austin Shumanski gave the Hawks the lead through one.
Rory Gregoire tied it in the second, but Jordan Braid’s shorthanded goal and Brandon Lesko’s even strength marker gave the Hawks a 4-2 lead.
Gregoire’s second of the game, with 35 seconds left in period two, brought the Outlaws within one, and Garrett Cameron’s goal on the power play in the third period tied it up at 4-4. But Lesko’s unassisted goal with 6:35 remaining gave the Hawks the win.
The Hawks now face Wilkie on Tuesday night before the series heads back to Hafford Thursday. Game five if necessary would be back in Wilkie on March 3. The Outlaws also have SHA provincial Senior B quarterfinal action on Feb. 29 at Leroy; they lead that series 1-0.
The Outlaws-Hawks winner will face Macklin, who swept Kindersley in three straight games to make it to the finals.
They clinched the series Friday night with a 3-2 win in Kindersley. Carson Pickett’s goal in overtime won the game and the series for the Mohawks, who now get a few days off to await the Wilkie-Hafford result.
