A mix of youth and experience is the main story for the junior basketball programs at John Paul II Collegiate and North Battleford Comprehensive High School this season.

If it wasn’t for a disastrous opening to the night for the Battlefords AAA Stars, the outcome of their game with the Prince Albert Mintos might have been different.

It’s a big jump from playing in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League to being on the ice in the Western Hockey League. That’s especially true when you’re playing for a team that many are expecting to be in the league final, at worst, this spring.

Staff Following a tough 6-1 loss to the Prince Albert Mintos on the road last Thursday, the Battlefords AAA Stars had a much better effort away from home this week.

The Battlefords AAA Sharks took on their traditional rivals, the Prince Albert Northern Bears, for two games at Battleford Arena this weekend.

Throughout the 2016-17 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, the offensive firepower that the Battlefords North Stars forward core has provided on a regular basis has been impressive to watch.

Of the 12 teams in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, the Battlefords North Stars are the only one that haven’t had a player take part in the World Junior A Challenge since it started in 2006.

It was a special weekend for the Medstead Mustangs senior boys’ volleyball team. Not only were they the host team for this year’s SHSAA 2A tournament, but they also captured their fourth provincial championship in school history.

After being swept aside in three games by the Shellbrook Silvertips in last year’s Saskatchewan Prairie Hockey League final, the Edam Three Stars are determined to come away with the league championship.

As it is for every school in the province, the goal for the John Paul II Crusaders and Unity Warriors basketball teams is to make it to the Hoopla provincial championships in March.
