Montreal Lake Cree Nation issues evacuation order due to smoke

Montreal Lake Cree Nation has issued an immediate evacuation order for vulnerable residents due to fast-moving wildfire smoke approaching the community.

MONTREAL LAKE CREE NATION — A public notice was issued by Chief Joyce McLeod on July 13 calling for the immediate evacuation of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation. 

“An ordered evacuation is being issued by the Montreal Lake Cree Nation due to smoke from the wildfires. The smoke is fast-moving, and individuals listed as Priority 1 and Priority 2 must begin evacuating immediately due to the high density of smoke expected to reach the community,” the notice stated. 

The evacuation order outlines the following priority groups: 

Montreal Lake’s priority list includes: 

  • People with existing respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma, lung cancer, COPD) 

  • People with existing cardiovascular conditions (e.g., angina, heart attack, congestive heart failure) 

  • Infants under six months old 

  • The elderly 

  • Pregnant women 

  • People with diabetes 

Evacuation instructions: 

  • Lunch will be served at 2 p.m. at MLCFA. 

  • Charter buses will arrive at MLCFA at 2:30 p.m., with departure to North Battleford scheduled for 3 p.m. 

  • Individuals are asked to register at the Montreal Lake Child and Family Services Command Centre: 

  • Indicate whether you are staying with family and provide their location. 

  • If travelling privately to Tropical Inn, 1001 Hwy 16, North Battleford, Sask., indicate your method of travel. 

  • Gas cards will be provided upon registration for those travelling in private vehicles. 

  • Pets are not allowed on transportation or at the hotel. 

  • Staff from the William Charles Health Centre will be on-site at the hotel to support evacuees. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) will also be present. 

What to bring: 

  • Personal identification 

  • Prescription medications 

  • Important documents 

  • Phone charger 

  • A change of clothes
