MACKLIN — Dreams of one day playing in the NHL do come true. Macklin’s Reschny family NHL draft experience is a beautiful blend of emotions, dreams and endless support as they receive hundreds of congratulatory messages and calls from back home and across the hockey community.
Newly drafted Calgary Flamer Cole Reschny was able to experience another incredible career milestone with his family at his side, June 27, at the NHL draft.
Allison Reschny, mother of the newest NHL draft pick, said, “The response and support from Macklin has been overwhelming and we have not even arrived home yet.
“We have always been Oilers fans but we told Cole we would switch in a heartbeat to have not only the opportunity of him being drafted but also by a team that is easily within driving distance. We also have extended family that lives there,” she added.
The family shared their thoughts on attending the NHL draft, waiting with anticipation, and the exuberance when Cole’s name was called in the first round.
“Being there in person was an unbelievable experience. It was even more overwhelming and emotional than we thought it would be. Hearing those words meant it really was happening.
“The NHL did such a great job with the draft and including the family to find and meet up with Cole after, and then the Calgary Flames hosted us to an amazing family gathering to celebrate where we even had the privilege for our family to meet and visit with a true legend, Lanny McDonald. It honestly felt like we were all dreaming.”
SaskToday asked Allison if this would change anything for the Reschnys moving forward, knowing other kids in the family are also following their own successful athletic sports paths.
“It does not change anything. If Cole gets the opportunity to eventually play games in Calgary with the Flames it will be so great as it’s close to home,” Allison reponded.
While the focus was on the community’s graduation June 27, Macklin residents have taken to social media, community events and coffee row to share their excitement at this hometown hero getting the call to be part of elite hockey players in the NHL.
