UNITY — Many hockey fans were disappointed to watch Game 6 of the Stanley Cup playoffs declare the Florida Panthers champions. However, the recent announcement coming from the Unity Miners locker room has got local fans excited.
Posted on their social media pages, the Miners have announced their decision to leave the Sask West Hockey League (SWHL) to join the Cross Roads Hockey League(CRHL). Blaine Gerein with the Miners spoke to SaskToday on the announcement.
“The past few seasons have not been favourable to us, even with our imported players. We have some young, local guys who want to play for the home team but also be able to go to work the next day. The Miners' executive felt moving to the CRHL would give our local hometown hockey heroes that opportunity and be able to play a lot closer to home.
“Hopefully, we will be able to win a few more games, win back our fan base and see some new, young local guys on the ice. Moving leagues will not guarantee wins, but it’s at least a start to something better.
Currently, the CRHL includes the Kerrobert Tigers, Dodsland Stars, Rosetown Redwings, Kindersley Kodiaks and Luseland Mallards. Gerein did say there may be another team joining the league, but it has not yet been confirmed.
Gerein also added that the club has decided to change ticket prices.
“We want to fill the arena in the new season, so tickets will be $5 all season long,” said the executive.
The hockey club will be meeting sometime in October for scheduling and urges anyone who would like to volunteer to reach out to the club.
