UNITY — Following the death of a British Columbia man, the RCMP says it is disclosing police interaction with the man prior to the rollover that killed him in order to be transparent.
On Aug. 23, at approximately 3 p.m., Unity RCMP responded to a single vehicle rollover near the intersection of Highway 14 and Highway 675, west of Unity. The driver of the vehicle was declared deceased by EMS at the scene. His family has been notified.
Because of the interaction with police prior to the rollover, Saskatchewan RCMP notified the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) of the male’s death, but says SIRT determined the incident was not within its mandate.
Police say, prior to the rollover, Unity RCMP received several reports about the vehicle, including that it was driving erratically. Officers attempted traffic stops, they say, but the vehicle did not stop and continued on at a high rate of speed. When officers responded to the rollover, they provided first aid to the male until EMS arrived.
"We are disclosing the police interaction as part of our ongoing commitment to transparency," stated a release by RCMP issued Monday.
Unity RCMP continue to investigate with the assistance of a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist.
