The always media shy Unity Fire Chief Leroy Timmermans is off into the sunset as he has announced he has handed the fire chief duty reins over to Dwaine Kopp, who had been serving as Deputy Fire Chief.

UNITY - After serving the Unity Fire Department for 15 years, nine and a half of those years as chief, Leroy Timmermans is handing over the reins of this division of protective services in Unity.

Timmermans also served as board member for the Sask. Volunteer Fire Fighter Association.

In a social media post, Timmermans said it has been a great learning experience and he is thankful for the many great people he has met and worked with over the years.

The town is set to appoint Dwaine Kopp as the new fire chief. He served under Timmermans as deputy chief. Jeremy Thompson will move into the deputy chief role.

Dozens of community members, fellow firefighters, the former Unity mayor as well as neighboring fire departments commended Timmermans on his work and congratulated him on his retirement from the force. One notable comment came from a fellow retired chief noting that he passes on thanks to Timmermans’ family as they are the true backbone in a firefighter ‘s and chief’s commitment to serve the people.

More details on this story will be in the Aug. 13 issue of the Unity-Wilkie Press-Herald when we return from summer break.
