REGINA — The Regina Farmers’ Market (RFM) is set to host its 2nd annual Tomato Festival.
The festival brings roughly 70 vendors normally seen at RFM’s market, and shines a light on farmers who grow tomatoes.
Holly Laird, executive director of RFM, mentioned this festival takes place at the beginning of tomato season.
“Really the beginning of August is when we really start to see tomatoes start growing.”
The idea behind the festival was to bring in a special event since the RFM has to move locations with the Queen City Ex coming into the REAL District. Normally, the RFM host their Saturday markets at Confederation Park.
From their first event, Laird estimates close to 10,000 people showed up.
“People are very excited about tomatoes, so we had to do it again for a second year.”
The main part of the event is the tomato contest.
“There are many categories that are open to the public, including the most unique tomato, the prettiest tomato, and those are voted on by the public at the festival,” said Laird.
Anyone from the public, including vendors, is eligible to enter into different categories.
Anyone who wants to enter can drop off the tomato at our information booth between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m,” said Laird. “We're recommending earlier the better because then there's a greater chance for public voting.”
The contest includes prizes, like upwards of $100 in market money for categories.
Other parts of the festival include a petting Zoo, live music, games, activities, and more.
The festival begins on Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Saskatchewan Legislature Building and will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
