SASKATOON – A fundraiser for the family of Saskatoon Police Service officer Const. Chris Sedgewick, a 13-year member of the force, has raised more than $37,000 towards its $50,000 goal.
Sedgewick died on Friday, Aug. 25, and a video in his remembrance said there is no known cause of his death yet.
“As our first responder family and greater community are grieving the loss of a brother, two little men are beginning a new chapter without their amazing Dad,” posted Shaina Lynden who started the fundraiser.
“Chris was an incredible father to Carson, Lincoln, and to Kassie's daughter Rian. Chris and the kids were often out exploring new adventures on bikes or scooters around Saskatoon or in the water at Wakaw Lake. His creativity and patience could be seen in his delicate teaching moments shared with them in his work shop and backyard garden, and his love for them was evident always.
“While Kassie (Block) navigates the many challenges ahead of them, our community can honour our friend and co-worker through our support of what he loved most, his boys,” added Lynden.
Kassie Block is the mother of Const. Chris Sedgewick's two boys. She is originally from Estevan and is the daughter of Carol and Del Block. Del Block was a long-time police officer in Estevan and was Estevan's police chief from 2009-2014; he died in 2020.
The fundraiser will be used to cover Sedgewick’s children’s education, athletic registrations, childcare, counselling and support services, Carson's Autism therapy and medication, and more time with their mom through the difficult days ahead.
The flags at Saskatoon Police Service have been lowered to half-mast to honour Const. Sedgewick’s dedication to duty and commitment to community safety.
‘It is with great sorrow that we share the loss of not only a devoted and. Valued police officer, but a father, a brother, a son, and a friend,” said Troy Cooper, Saskatoon Chief of Police in a tweet. “Chris’ passing is an immeasurable loss to those that knew him.”
