Assiniboia Fire Department has impressive April, with zero calls

The Assiniboia Fire Department are reminding residents of fire safety regulations that are set in the town and surrounding RMs.

ASSINIBOIA - Casey Topola, spokesperson for Assiniboia Fire Department, said remarkably, they had zero calls for the month of April.

AFD did host a volunteer firefighters’ recruitment open house on April 8. Organizers said the event did come away with two guys very interested, of which one has already attended a practice night.

The Assiniboia and District Wildlife Federation and Assiniboia Pistol Club donated $1,000 to AFD, coming from the annual wildlife banquet.

The fire department posted on social media that these funds would be used to purchase and upgrade equipment for the rescue unit that included a cordless reciprocating saw, cutoff grinder, case and two cordless scene lights.

AFD members did undertake two practices for the month of April.

A search-and-rescue practise in the fire training grounds, along with some basic refreshers on operation of trucks and ladder usage were part of continued training that team members undergo.

A day of wildland fire fighting practise at the fairgrounds was also part of the April activity for this division of the community’s protective services. This activity helped members learn the theory side of this very important skill set as well as put into practise these skills.

Topola said that this wildland fire practise is also a reminder to residents to be aware of the dry conditions in the area, making it possible for stubble and grass fires. Until timely rains are received and things green up, everyone is reminded to be cautious and vigilant about dry conditions that exist.

“We also sent two firefighters to North Battleford to participate in the SVFFA Spring fire school on April 26 to 28. Assiniboia firefighters Chayce Thronberg attended to gain his SCBA certification, and Nathan Rust attended as an instructor, teaching the vehicle firefighting course,” added Topola.

With the return of spring and warm weather, the Assiniboia Fire Department are reminding residents of fire safety regulations that are set in the town and surrounding RMs.

For any rural residents please remember that if you are planning on a controlled burn, you must call 1-866-404-4911 and report your planned activity.

This will give dispatch information that will help avoid dispatching firefighters unnecessarily.

With the low snow cover this winter, conditions are very dry already. Please be prepared with fireguards, equipment and water.

Residents of Assiniboia are reminded that only preservative-free weed or wood products be burned in an appropriate non-combustible receptacle with a metal screened cover.

No personal materials shall be permitted to the open burning of trash, refuse, garbage, industrial waste or any other material or waste in an open fire or incinerator within the town limits.

Local residents who have questions or concerns can refer to town’s Bylaw 09/20 Part IV (outdoor fires) or contact the town office. Enjoy the warm weather and please practise fire safety.
