The Glentworth graduating class held its celebratory day on May 13. This year’s graduates included Katelyn Fehr, Hannah Galbraith, Taryn Harden, Callie McCrea, Kyle Pana, Miriah Petersen, Logan Peterson, Emily Wallace and Brody Zak,
The ceremony started with the graduates walking in with their parents. Roses were given to their mothers and grandmothers. The graduates took their place on the stage while Lorry Okraincee, mistress of ceremonies, welcomed the audience, acquainted the guests with the graduates and introduced the afternoon program before leading the singing of “O Canada”.
Dr. Shawn Davidson, Trustee of Prairie South School Division #210, gave his regards from the school division and passed on some words of wisdom.
Hannah Galbraith introduced their guest speaker, for whom they all hold a special place: Janet Tetreau. She was asked to talk to the graduates about their chosen Dr. Suess quote: “You’ve got brains in your head, You’ve got feet in your shoes, You can steer yourself in any direction you choose!” She referred to ‘Oh the Places You’ll Go’ and used quotes to give advice to each graduate.
Katelyn Fehr and Taryn Harden, honoured as Valedictorians, noted everyone’s positive impact on one another’s lives and focused on their individual traits. Miriah Petersen thanked the parents, the teachers, staff and the community members for their positive involvement in their lives. Kathy Rieder, principal, addressed the Class of 2017. After her compliments to the graduates, and sharing some of their school experiences, she presented ceremonial diplomas to the graduates. Next, Paul Primeau accepted the 2015-16 Governor General’s academic bronze medal. This prestigious award is based on the highest mark calculated from the Grade 12 transcripts.
Reading the histories and prophecies, the Grade 11’s, Makinley Okraincee and Daniel Primeau, shared their version of the graduates’ futures. The Last Will and Testament, a school tradition, was presented by Brody Zak and Logan Peterson. They bequeathed various items to family and community members. The audience then viewed an outstanding slide show created by Brody Zak. Mr. Lionel Moffatt delivered the benediction.
The graduates, with their escorts, left the stage and formed a receiving line outside the school. They returned to the gym later for the Grand March. Cake and refreshments were enjoyed during the dance and the social.
