Hidden treasure trove to be discovered at Assiniboia Museum

ASSINIBOIA - With warmer weather and the end of another school year, your thoughts likely turn to summer travel plans. Many are looking for a new adventure and new discoveries. With the economy as it is, you may be looking for a less expensive option for our vacation plans. It comes as a surprise to many that Assiniboia possesses a hidden gem – an amazing museum with much to discover. A day in the facility, owned by the town and under the direction of the Assiniboia and District Historical Society, will give new insight into the history of the area and help you relive memories of the good old days.

Here, you can walk down the 1912 boardwalk, past the stores, offices and a school from the time when the town was established in its present location. Its history and the influence of the railway are clearly chronicled in the displays. You will be introduced to the pioneers who braved the elements and had the courage to embark on a journey across the vast prairies to the unknown. You can see a collection of vintage vehicles, farm machinery, and railway equipment that illustrate the development of transportation, agriculture, lifestyle, and evolving arts in Assiniboia. The Assiniboia Museum possesses a collection of artifacts, photographs, documents, and memorabilia that tell the stories of the people who shaped the community from the First Nations and Metis to the settlers and immigrants.

The museum houses the Farquhar Collection of Vintage cars dating back to 1916. There is a large pictorial history and photo archive collection of the area.

The Prentice African Safari Exhibit is housed in a special atmospherically controlled room at the museum. Wilfred Prentice was a farmer, inventor and businessman from the Assiniboia area. Wilfred’s hobby was to go on African safaris and he had quite a large animal collection, some of which was donated to the Town of Assiniboia.

Also on the property, a Pole Shed and Quonset with agricultural machinery are among the many interesting things featured.

The Assiniboia and District Museum is located at 506 Third Avenue West in Assiniboia and is open from June to September 1, daily, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is by donation.
