Ruth Fuson of Spokane, Washington, arrived by train in Glasgow where her sister, Joyce Mitchell, met her. They drove to Regina and spent the evening with Teresa Hnatiuk. They accompanied two nieces and a sister-in-law to Winnipeg to celebrate the 80th birthday celebration of their brother, Larry and Sylvia Elder. On the way back, they stopped at Kipling to visit with their other sister, Dorothy McQuitty. Ruth visited for another day before returning to Spokane.
Robert and Loretta Eastley were in Saskatoon recently to visit with Janice and Collin Seebach and family. They attended the convocation exercises of their granddaughter, Erica Seebach, who obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Saskatchewan.
Dallas, Danita and Hope Leduc drove to 100 Mile House in B.C. to visit with his cousin, Dustin and Nicole Leduc. They enjoyed hiking and fishing while there. They also stopped at the Calgary Zoo for a tour.
Rev. Eunkyu Ji and his wife Sun were in Swift Current last weekend to attend the Kite Festival.
Marna Riopel of Kitchener is spending some time visiting with her daughters, Wendy Hiltz at McCord and Heather Pluecks at Glentworth and their families. She also enjoyed the fabulous quilt show in McCord.
Robert and Loretta Eastley spent Father’s Day weekend at their cabin at Gouverneur Dam. Also spending the weekend there were Linda and Randy Kutschall and family of Shaunavon and his dad, Joe and Doreen, of Gull Lake.
Darwin and Laurie Raes were in Maple Creek last weekend to visit with daughter, Regan and Jason Knight and family. The Knights have recently moved to another house.
The Glentworth Branch of the Lafleche Credit Union held a member appreciation lunch on June 26. There was a good crowd out for their delicious chilli and bun lunch. Several door prizes were given out.
Garth Flynn and Heather Pluecks drove their Camaro to Deadwood, South Dakota, last week. They took in the Camaro Rally in Sturgis and were amazed at the vehicles. They reported seeing three Saskatchewan license plates, several Alberta ones and plates from many, many states.
Robert and Loretta Eastley were in Regina on June 27 to visit with Brian and Teresa Eastley and family. They attended the Grade 12 graduation exercises for granddaughter Kiera who had attended Campbell Collegiate.
Lillian Klein and Sonia Falconer were in Briercrest on June 24 to attend the 50th wedding anniversary celebration in honor of Chuck and Rhaya Alton. Rev. Chuck Alton was the United Church Minister in Lafleche for 13 years before retiring and moving to Briercrest.
School notes
Mankota School had three goals in their Learning Improvement Plan for the 2016-2017 school year. The first goal was for every student in Grade 1 to 6 to increase at least one benchmark level as measured by Fountas and Pinnell – and this goal was achieved. The second goal was to have student participation in school clubs and school sponsored social events increase by 30 per cent, which they met. The third goal was for 80 per cent of students in Grade 3 to 12 to achieve a proficient score in narrative writing as measured by SPDU rubrics. They only improved by 40 per cent, but they are pleased with the progress and will continue working on this goal next year.
Mrs. Christina Sayers got the school yearbooks back on track. She spent countless hours filling in missing years and organizing these memory keepsakes for the students.
The R.M. councillors have approved the continued use of the R.M. shop for the welding program, so the Magnet program with Kincaid and Glentworth will continue next year.
The Mankota Branch of Innovation Credit Union donated $570 to Mankota School. The funds will go to purchasing an automated external defibrillator that will be housed in the school.
The high school students held a Cultural Fair. The students researched different countries and created displays that included Mexico, New Zealand, Vietnam, Russia, China, Japan and Australia.
The Visual Arts 10 students recently explored functional art which is designed for a specific use. Handmade work or crafts such as ceramics, jewelry and woodworking fall into that category. After some research, each student chose a style of functional art to create. Some of these were cake decorating, birdhouse-making and decorating, quilting, rug-making, candle-making and pillow-making. In their creations, students were required to incorporate the styles of three different artists.
The Grade 1 to 3 students along with their teachers, Mrs. Anthony and Mrs. Sayers, visited the Wood Mountain Rodeo Ranch Museum on June 14. The students toured the museum, and were excited to see rodeo pictures of some of the local people they knew, especially Mankota School’s own Mr. Rhett Fitzpatrick. After, they participated in leather stamping and making bannock. They had a hearty lunch, then took part in a scavenger hunt and enjoyed some playtime at the playground.
At the Glentworth School, the school hosted a Retirement Luncheon at the gym honouring Clem and Donna Boisvert on June 28. They have decided to retire after 40 plus years of having their route. The Grade 6, 7 and 8 classes prepared a lunch of Fettucine Alfredo, Caesar Salad and refreshments. Community members were welcome to attend and extend their good wishes to Clem and Donna. Their daughters Tanya and Randy Fehr and Marcia Clermont and some of their children were also in attendance.
On June 26, the Glentworth Grade 1 and 2 class enjoyed a trip to Wood Mountain Park.
The pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students with their chaperones were on a field trip to McCord on the morning of June 27.
