UC Chimes: Truth makes you free

When I was a teenager, a high school teacher told us, "love makes you blind!" Without knowing the true meaning of it, at that time, most of our friends tried to become blind anyway. Of course I also almost became blind.

When I was a teenager, a high school teacher told us, "love makes you blind!" Without knowing the true meaning of it, at that time, most of our friends tried to become blind anyway. Of course I also almost became blind. Whenever I remember our immature and unwise actions back then, I realize that there was already instructions to lead into right way of loving. And there was also wisdom to guide a right path of living. But there are always people who do not pay attention to these instructions and the wisdom that has come from human experiences throughout history.

Sometimes a position or a social status can make a person blind and deaf. Even though things may be obvious to everyone else, sometimes the person who is in the position can not see the situation. It is sad. It becomes shameful, not only for the person who is in charge of that position but for all the people who are related to it. Recently, the Senate expense scandals are an excellent example that shows how and why position and social status can make people blind and deaf. It shows how the people who were prestigious and respectable in previous positions can become the different people in political positions!

Prior to criticizing and throwing stones at them, it tells that human beings are not perfect. Therefore any system or organization regardless of political, social, business or religious, it cannot be perfect unless each individual tries hard to comply with laws and regulations to achieve the common good rather than to take benefits and advantages through their position. Someone said, "if you lose money, you lose nothing; if you lose honour, you lose a lot; but if you lose health, you lose everything." Indeed the Senators have already lost a lot of things. The only way for them to recover their reputations, somewhat, is to tell the truth and take responsibility for their actions.

Everyone wants to know the truth about what is going on. In sensitive social issues, people want to know "the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth." Unfortunately people only hear some of the truth, half truths and pseudo truths. As long as people do not tell the truth, they will never be free from their transgressions. And other people will also wonder about what is true. Jesus said, "and you will know the truth, the truth will make you free" (John 8:32). Eventually people will know what is going on, and the truth will allow people to judge right and wrong. The fact is that whenever we try to stand on the truth, then the truth makes us free, not people nor polls. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life" (John 14:6). Thus Jesus is the universal truth for all matters of our life. His truth will make us free from all kinds of human problems.
