Grandmothers were pitched against grandmothers, but all in good fun, at the fifth annual children’s art auction at the Shurniak Art Gallery in Assiniboia on October 22. The auction showcased pieces by very young artists.
The event raised a total $3,910 that included a live auction of art and a silent auction of donated items. All the proceeds from the auction are going to Assiniboia Child Care Services for projects such as the yard improvement and deck with enclosed screen which will allow the children more outside time.
Boyd Stenburg donated his time to act as auctioneer for the event. There were 39 items up for sale made by children at ACCS aged 21 months to seven years. Pieces sold in a range from $25 to $170 purchased by parents, grandparents, friends as well as local businesses. Family and friends were able to place reserved bids on the children’s art pieces this year. Their art had been on display all the previous week and before the auction. The art pieces featured many unique kinds of materials such as corn starch and salt that was painted. The art included elastic snaps, water colour prints with a squeegee, a fly swatter, painting on foil, paper clip designs, mosaics and collages and even a metallic painting made with a Q-tip by a six-year-old that sold for $75. A pair of eight-year-olds made wind chimes from cutlery. Another piece featured painting on the inside of a piece of rustic bark, and a dripping technique decorated a potted plant. During a break in the sale, refreshments were provided by Fresh Start.
