A Workplace Seminar, to familiarize Weyburn and area, employers, employees, and perspective employees with the resources available to meet literacy challenges in the second decade of the 21st century is set for Wednesday, September 21.

Indeed, the historically recent dynamic economy in south eastern Saskatchewan has made Literacy-Essential Skills for the Workplace even more important. As such, this seminar provides a forum for learning and creative synergies that can assist in sustaining economic growth in south eastern Saskatchewan.

Definitions for what constitute Literacy and Essential Skills are needed, however. The four traditional literacy skills are: reading, writing, document use, and numeracy. These basic literacy skills are taught in adult literacy programs throughout Saskatchewan. These traditional skills are complemented by five inter-related essential skills: computer use, thinking, oral communication, working with others and continuous learning.

There are various stakeholders taking part in the Literacy-Essential Skills for the Workplace Seminar that are contributing to this seminar. The major partners within the Weyburn & Area Lifelong Learning Support Literacy (WALLS) group are: Big Brothers Big Sisters (Weyburn); Great Plains Ford; Regional KidsFirst; Southeast Regional College; South East Regional Intersectoral Committee; Sun Country Health Region and Weyburn Public Library. These major partners are pleased to take part in this worthwhile seminar.

The Literacy-Essential Skills for the Workplace Seminar will be held at McKenna Hall, Lower Level from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 pm with lunch served at noon.

Guest speakers will include Connie Jones, Director of the Saskatchewan Literacy Network and author Carey Rigby-Wilcox, author of My Mummy Couldn't Read.

Kam Teo, Branch Manager of the Weyburn Public Library, will be the MC of the event.
