Mark Culture Days on your calendar

The Weyburn Culture Days are quickly approaching and there will be plenty of activities worth marking on the calendar. It's also not too late for young talent to sign up to perform.

The City of Weyburn, in partnership with the Sun Country Kids Club and Weyburn Arts Council, has organized for the community a unique festival that is also happening across Canada. On September 28, 29 and 30, anyone can participate in free workshops and enjoy a wide range of entertainment being offered during Culture Days.

Anyone can experience the sights and sounds of other cultures, because the purpose of Culture Days is to increase awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement by all Canadians in cultural activities in their communities.

The Weyburn Arts Council has organized two free artistic workshops for Culture Days.

On September 28, there will be an Aboriginal Art Workshop at the Signal Hill Arts Centre, where instructor Carol Morin will explore drum and song as well as canvas texturing techniques.

The Arts Centre will also offer a Clay Workshop that day, which will provide participants with general information about clay and a hands-on opportunity to get a feel for the medium. The clay workshop will be offered by Goodwater potter Darlene Martin.

At the Weyburn Comprehensive School Cafetorium on Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30, Sun Country Kids Club has organized a variety of entertainment as well as a trade show of local and regional artists and vendors.

Saturday's events will include a performance by the Weyburn Twirlers, a square dancing club that is always hoping to attract new members. A number of dance performers with diverse ethnic backgrounds will also take the stage. Greg Johnson 'Tornado Hunter' is scheduled to appear as well.

Young talented people ages six to 21 can still be added to the playbill for the Youth Talent Show, although space is limited. The variety show takes place at 11:30 on the 29th, offering an opportunity for young people to show off with any type of performance - from solo to group, musical to comedic, strange to dramatic. Prizes will be given to the top three peoples' choice, with $250 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place.

On Sunday, a Dream Catcher Workshop will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The entertainment and trade show will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and at 10:30 on Sunday and will run until 6:00 p.m. on both days.

Entrants are still being admitted for the Multicultural Fashion Show taking place on the 30th at 1:00 p.m. Anyone with a cultural garb that would be noteworthy for an audience is welcome to join in on the show.

To register to participate in the fashion show or the talent show, contact Sun Country Kids Club at 842-3215 or suncountrykidsclub9@gmail.com.

Weyburn Culture Days event sponsors are Sask Culture and Sask Lotteries and the entertainment is sponsored by The Family Place, Southeast Regional Library and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration.
