Provincial awards to be presented

The Weyburn Horticultural Society hosted a provincial horticultural show during the Wheat Festival on August 10. The show was only held for one day, since many people travelled across the province to attend the event, which was held at Knox Hall.

The Weyburn Horticultural Society recently hosted the Provincial Horticultural Show, where Shirley Jacob won a ribbon for the best vegetable collection. The Society will host an awards banquet on September 26.

The Weyburn Horticultural Society hosted a provincial horticultural show during the Wheat Festival on August 10. The show was only held for one day, since many people travelled across the province to attend the event, which was held at Knox Hall. Thirty-eight participants submitted a show total of 474 entries.

Weyburn's club fared very well and many of the provincial awards will stay local.

In Class 1, for best houseplant, the winners were Ed and Shirley Baird. Shirley Jacob had the best vegetable collection. Grace Plonka had the best outdoor plant and Cindy Koroluik of Kamsack presented the best container garden.

In Class 2, the best annual ribbon went to Elsie Esler of Saskatoon. Letty Shalm from Watrous brought the best perennial and Beryl Peake from Leask brought the best lily.

In Class 3, Lorraine Herberholz had the best rose. Elsie Esler of Saskatoon had the best mini rose as well as the best vase of mini roses. Shirley Jacob won for the best vase of roses.

In Class 4, Cindy Koroluik, won for the best sweet peas and Shirley Jacob won for the best vase of sweet peas.

In Class 5, Lorraine Herberholz won for best dahlia and Grace Plonka had the best vase of dahlias.

In Class 6, Lorraine Herberholz took the prize for the best spike gladiolus and Myrna Jacob had the best vase of gladiolus.

In Class 7, Shirley Jacob won for the best floral art.

In Class 8, best flower arrangement went to Iris Ernst of Watrous. Lorraine Herberholz won for best vase arrangement and Grace Plonka won best people's choice.

In Class 9, Janet VanWinKoop won for best plate of vegetables, best plate of potatoes and best plate of tomatoes. Shirley Jacob had the best collection of herbs and Derrel and Joyce Rodine had the best vegetable collection.

In Class 10, best plate of fruit went to Janet VanWinKoop.

In Class 20, the junior exhibits, Houstyn Gerry won for the best flower exhibit and Marshall Watson won for best flower arrangement.

In Class 21, Houstyn Gerry won for best vegetable arrangement.

In Class 22, Jared Metheral won for the best fruit exhibit.

In Class 23, the junior special, Jacey Watson won for the best arrangement.

The cumulative points of each winner result in Grand Aggregate Certificates winners. For flowers, the aggregate winner was Elsie Esler and for vegetables, the aggregate winner was Phyllis Hansen of Assiniboia. Hansen also won the Grand Championship for total points.

Houstyn Gerry won the junior class for total points. The Youth Gardener Trophy went to Jacey Watson.

Awards and prizes will be presented on September 26, with a Pot Luck Supper at Perfect Inns in Weyburn at 6:00 p.m.
