Past and present members of the Weyburn Twirlers Square Dance Club and their guests celebrated the Club`s 50th Anniversary on October 16 at Grace United Church following an afternoon Zone 8 Dance and Workshop.

The upper hall at Grace United Church was decorated with scores of square dancer silhouettes and artificial prairie lily stems. The three Weyburn Twirlers banners, past and present, were displayed on the walls. Also on display were some square dancing badges and a picture poster of Weyburn Twirler callers throughout the 50 years. A display table held an interesting assortment of scrapbooks and albums dating back 50 years.

Twirler president Marvin Storey welcomed those present. He thanked everyone for coming to help the Twirlers celebrate their 50th Anniversary. He then invited all to partake of a turkey and ham cold plate supper courtesy of the Weyburn Twirlers. There were 77 dancers and guests were in attendance, coming from Estevan, Creelman, Regina, Moose Jaw, Fillmore, Rockglen, Milestone and Weyburn.

After dinner, Master of Ceremonies Gordon James paid tribute to long-time present Twirler dancers, Pete and Vera Wodzinski, who have been dancing since 1962. Gordon also paid tribute to past and present Twirler callers and guest callers and cuers who were present, namely Don and Frankie Mortenson, Bob and Rae Nursu, Bill and Shirley Treleavan, Val and Lane Wright, Norm and Barbara Wood, Les and Shirley Hillman and Bob and Mariam Lees.

Margaret Lukey and Jean Janoski talked about the highlights from the Twirlers 50-year past. Ken Schuster, a long-time Regina dancer spoke about his early dancing days. On behalf of the Canadian Square and Round Dancing Society, Bill and Shirley Treleavan from Milestone presented the Weyburn Twirlers Club with a certificate commemorating 50 years of dancing. President couple Marvin and Carol Storey accepted the certificate on behalf of the Twirlers. Bert Johnson and Nellie Schafer of Moose Jaw and President Couple of the Saskatchewan Square and Round Dance Federation extended congratulations to the Twirlers, as did Bob Coleman of Estevan, President of Zone 8.

Dancing resumed in earnest with Bob and Mariam Lees calling the squares and cuing the rounds. While most danced, others chose to socialize and reminisce. During a scheduled `break`, Ella Lewis was on hand with some humour. An anniversary cake and ice cream rounded out the evening.

Please note that the fall season of square dancing has begun. The next dance is on October 20 and subsequent dances are on November 10, 17, 20 (Zone dance, Estevan), 24, December 8 and 15. It is not too late to join the Twirlers but please act now! Phone Marvin or Carol Storey for more information.
