The pace of drilling continues to pick up in Saskatchewan as the rig count continues to climb.

According to sister publication Rig Locator (www.riglocator.ca), there were 38 active drilling rigs in Saskatchewan on May 31. It’s a big improvement compared to 2016, when there were only 7 rigs working in the whole province on May 31.

The number has seen a significant boost as Crescent Point Energy Corp, the largest oil producer in Saskatchewan has begun ramping up its program. The company had 12 rigs working in Western Canada. Two were in Alberta, one in Manitoba, three in southwest Saskatchewan and six in southeast Saskatchewan.

Crescent Point led the nation in the number of active drilling rigs, a position it held for most of the last two years. In number two position was Seven Generations Energy Ltd., with eight, all concentrated south of Grande Prairie, Alta.

In the southeast, Crescent Point had one rig, Horizon Drilling Rig 34, working at Hardy, southwest of Radville. In the Oungre and Torquay areas, Trinidad Drilling Rigs 421 and 423 were working, as well as Alliance Drilling and Oilfield Service Ltd.’s Rig 3. Alliance Rig 5 and Precision Drilling Rig 146 were both near Stoughton.

Torc Oil & Gas Ltd. had Trinidad Rig 427 west of Oungre.

Astra Oil Corp. employed Stampede Drilling Rig 2 southeast of Stoughton. At Lampman, Aldon Oils Ltd. had Panther Drilling Rig 2.
