Annual meeting held for Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce

ASSINIBOIA - Many items were discussed during the annual general meeting for the Assiniboia and District Chamber of Commerce, held on June 3.

Mayor Sharon Schauenberg brought greetings and an update from the Town of Assiniboia to Chamber members. The mayor reported the town’s finalized budget at about $6.5 million. It will go into infrastructure, recreation, planning, and development as well as government and protective services.

Emergency Services update at Assiniboia Union Hospital – Mayor Schauenberg assured that a positive announcement will soon be on its way.

Paving - the town will continue paving and improving Highways 2 and 13 as well as streets and sidewalks in town.

Water quality and landfill - Work is ongoing for both projects with new engineers on board.

Recreation - In addition to the pool opening and ball diamonds busy, the RCMP musical ride will be in town on June 15.

The new Southland Co-op Centre is still on track to open in mid-September, and Canada Day weekend is action-packed including a pancake breakfast, a Brad Johner and Boys concert, and fireworks.

A fundraiser for the Shurniak Gallery will feature a Black Top Hop on July 2 along with food, fun, and singer Justin Labrash.

Better Together – weekly lunch barbecues start in July and will be every Tuesday all summer at the swimming pool.

Mayor Schauenberg closed with gratitude for the new businesses in our community and the relationship the town has with the local Chamber.

“We look forward to collaborating with you on more future events. We are very fortunate to serve you, the residents of our community, not only growing our community but making it better, making it one of the best places to live in the province.”

Assiniboia truly is considered the ‘heart of the golden south’, according to the mayor.

Chamber of Commerce annual meeting: Members approved the agenda, reviewed previous annual general meeting minutes as well as the financial statements for 2021. An accountant was appointed for 2022, and the mission and vision statements were adopted.

The Chamber’s vision follows: “for Assiniboia and district to have a vibrant, sustainable business community.”

Goals for the local Chamber are to increase and sustain membership, to increase engagement with the business community, to strengthen partnerships with community organizations, and to secure diversified funding.

Board officers were elected for 2022, and the meeting was adjourned.

Several successful Chamber events were held in 2021 to support and promote local business, such as the annual golf tournament, the business luncheon, Lunch n’ Learns, Santa Light Parade, and the Christmas Social.

Shelly Dahlman wrapped up the annual meeting. “I believe in what the Chamber does. We will continue supporting businesses in our community.”
