Nutrition Program at Legacy Park Elementary enters Farmers Grow Communities program

A farmer application was approved for Legacy Park Elementary School, and they have entered the "Canada's Farmers Grow Communities" program.

The Nutrition Program at Legacy Park Elementary School received $4,631.65 from the Neighbourhood Market fundraiser held by the Free Methodist Church, with support from several local businesses, who sponsored a barbecue, bake sale and free ice cream during the event. WEYBURN - In an effort to continue to grow their Nutrition Program, Legacy Park Elementary School has entered the “Canada’s Farmers Grow Communities” program.

This program is sponsored by the Bayer Fund to support local farming communities. The program allows farmers to register to win $2,500 for their favourite community charitable or not-for-profit organization, such as agricultural societies, 4-H clubs or schools. A farmer application was approved for Legacy Park Elementary School.

“We are in our third week of operating our Nutrition Program at Legacy Park Elementary School. We have partnered with Prairie Sky Co-op for weekly deliveries, and the Weyburn Comprehensive School who are making muffins for us,” said Shannon Seitz, Community Education Liaison at Legacy Park.

She added that the kitchen at Legacy Park is not ready quite yet, so the Foods 10 class at the Weyburn Comp is helping out by baking muffins.

“The students are understanding the program. It is new to Legacy Park Elementary, but our Souris School students and families are familiar with the program. We are offering fresh fruits, muffins daily, and supporting anyone who needs lunch assistance,” added Seitz.

The Weyburn Free Methodist Church had reached out to the Nutrition Program when it was available at Souris School three years ago. One day a week, they sent volunteers to help out with the program.

With COVID-19 restrictions in the school, those volunteers were unable to help out in the school facility, so they decided to help in other ways. Recently, the Free Methodist Church held a Neighbourhood Market, which raised over $4,600 for the Nutirition Program.

“We are looking for other ways to work creatively with other groups, either by hosting food drives, and collecting donations,” said Seitz.
