Carlyle Elementary School held their annual Terry Fox Run on Sept. 28. Students, staff, and community members took to the route on a day filled with warmth and fall beauty.
Much like last year, the school had a number of fundraising goals in mind for their students this year. These challenge goals started in 2010 when Principal Shelley Sargent received a letter from the Terry Fox Run organization. The organization was contacting schools to see what could be done to increase the amount and number of pledges. Those letters, sent out to schools throughout Canada, were aimed to increase participation and the amount of money raised for the foundation.
The elementary school stood up to challenge. Putting their heads together, the elementary staff developed fundraising goals for their students. If they achieved the goal, the staff would perform the corresponding reward for each individual goal.
In 2009, the students raised a total of $5,000, which as a result, was the base amount for the challenge meter last year and moving forward into this year.
This year, the challenge meter included six levels.
At the $5,000 fundraising mark, the meter read 'teacher/student switch.'
A total of $6,000 would mean that a game of teacher versus student dodgeball would take place in the school gymnasium.
The $7,000 mark meant that students would have the opportunity to soak their teacher of choice.
If the students met the fundraising goal of $8,000, there would be a teacher makeover.
A total of $9,000 would see the teachers dress up as royalty.
Finally, if the students raised $10,500 or more, the school would receive a school-wide fun afternoon.
To date, the school has raised $9,284.45 with more monies coming in daily. So, what does that mean for the students? Not only did the students meet their first goal, but they met a total of five. Five levels means five rewards for the students and staff at Carlyle Elementary School.
As of the most recent count, the top pledge earners at the school in order were Jorja Bendtsen with $302, Kaysha Turner raising $270, Max Waugh with $260, Erica Wilson coming in at $246.50, and Emily Nelson raising $170.
