April 28 is Day of Mourning

April 28th, 2012 is a day to rededicate ourselves to insisting on safe and healthy jobs for all Canadians.

April 28th, 2012 is a day to rededicate ourselves to insisting on safe and healthy jobs for all Canadians. The members of the Weyburn and District Labour Council invite the public to attend its annual ceremony to remember the workers of this province who have given their lives in the workplace.

The ceremony will be held on April 28th at 1:00 p.m. behind the T.C. Douglas Calvary Centre.

Representatives of local unions will place flower memorials for all workers who have been killed in the past year.

Each year in Canada there is an average of 1,000 workplace deaths and hundreds of thousands of injuries or work-related illnesses. The workers of our province are part of these statistics. They are among the many who are left disabled by occupational injuries and illnesses.

This year we will be remembering 37 workers who lost their lives over the last year in this province alone.

The day of mourning was established 27 years ago by the Canadian Labour Congress. April 28th honours workers who have been killed, who have been injured and who have had their health undermined by work-related illnesses. This day is set aside to recognize the sacrifices that working Canadians have made to earn a living for themselves and their families.

The progress that workers have made in past years is always at risk. On April 28th, "mourn for the dead, fight for the living", now more than ever. We must demand that governments enforce existing laws by providing the necessary tools and resources for this to happen. Lives are not saved by Governments simply adopting legislation; lives are saved by governments enforcing legislation.
