Benson Beef 4-H Club holds demo day

The Benson Beef 4-H Club recently held its demo day on what was a scorcher of a day in the southeast. It was held at the Mantei/Hale farm and we started the afternoon off by splitting into two different groups.

The Benson Beef 4-H Club recently held its demo day on what was a scorcher of a day in the southeast.

It was held at the Mantei/Hale farm and we started the afternoon off by splitting into two different groups. The younger members went with one of the leaders Jesse Mantei and they talked about grooming. After going through all grooming tips, the kids were able to practice blowing the steer out, combing and gluing the legs.

While the younger members were grooming, the older members were going over the animal and showmanship. A big thank you to Doug Walter and leader Kerri Hayes for helping out.

Once they were finished, the members took a quick water break and switched. The younger kids had a lot of fun learning the parts of the animal, and the older members got a refresher on grooming.

Once the demonstration was finished, we had a quick meeting to touch on our big fundraiser June 22. We will be doing a barbecue at the Mack Auction consignment sale at the Estevan Motor Speedway. This year our bake sale proceeds will go towards Gage Goetz’ steer auction campaign for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan.

Our last show and tell was held and Nigel Mack brought in some grooming supplies that he has been using and will use at the regional 4-H show and sale next month. His steer is going to look great once he is finished grooming. Adeline Oleshko wore a shirt with the 4-H pledge.

We say the 4-H pledge before every meeting.

After our meetings, the kids took their questionnaire and filled out an autobiography for our barn display.

Next up is our achievement day on July 2 at 9 a.m. at the Estevan Exhibition fairgrounds. The regional show and sale will be July 4.
