Students of Carlyle Elementary School and G.F. Kells High School gathered together on Friday, Nov. 9 to pay their respects to those who have and those who continue to serve our country.

The Colour Guard was led by an RCMP officer, followed by six students carrying flags. Everyone was asked to stand and sing the national anthem.

Students of various classes then presented poems and songs relating to Remembrance Day. This included a poem regarding war, the poem "Please wear a poppy," and a song about building bridges.

A youth recited the very famous poem, "In Flanders Fields," by John McCrae. Two students then read the roll call of the men and women who lost their lives from the area during both World Wars.

A video was then shared with those in attendance called, "A Pittance of Time" by Terry Kelly. Kelly had been in a Shoppers Drugmart when the patrons were asked to participate in two minutes of silence on Nov. 11, 1999. When asked to observe the two minutes all, but a father and his child stopped to show their respect. Kelly, therefore, created the song and video to express his feelings towards the father who was attempting to engage store clerks in checking out and setting a poor example for his child: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kX_3y3u5Uo.

Following this song, which expresses the importance of remembrance and the two minutes of silence observed in Canada, was the participation of everyone in the gym in two minutes of silence.

Wreaths were laid at the foot of the school's Remembrance Day cross, which was followed by God Save the Queen and the exiting of the Colour Guard.

Present at the service were veterans who sat in a position of honour at the front left of the gym, as well as a member of the RCMP.
