Carlyle town council news

During the last regular meeting of council, which was called to order on Dec. 19, councillors discussed the building of a daycare in Carlyle. A party has shown interest in developing the facility but formal arrangements have yet to be made.

Fire Safety at the Ramada Hotel was discussed for the second meeting in a row. In the previous meeting, concern over the building lacking a fire sprinkler system was voiced. At the Dec. 19 meeting, Doug Mulhall provided a report explaining why the facility does not require a fire sprinkler system, which representatives will bring to the next Fire Board meeting.

Council approved the purchase of spare vacuum pump for the water treatment plant.

Councillor Jenn Sedor was appointed as the town's representative for the Southeast Regional Library.

Amendments to the Occupational Health and Safety Act were discussed. The amendments-which include higher fines for summary offenses-are effective in January.

Council gave the go-ahead for a "Business Retention and Expansion Project." The project is set to begin on Jan. 9-local business owners have been invited to discuss areas where the town and they themselves can make improvements to the business community.

Finally, along with residents' next water bill, the town of Carlyle will be sending out its second community survey. Responses will be compared with last year's survey and will assist council with strategic planning. In last year's survey, recycling and water were two of the main areas highlighted by residents in need of attention-areas that council has addressed over the past year.
