Cenovus Energy Inc. has received WorkSafe Saskatchewan's 2014 Safe Employer Award.

The staff at the Cenovus Weyburn oil facility were recognized for their leadership in providing a safe place to work.

"Improving our safety performance is integral to everything we do at Cenovus," said Darcy Cretin, Cenovus Superintendent, Saskatchewan. "We're responsible for conducting all of our activities in a manner that ensures the health and safety of ourselves, our fellow workers and our neighbours in the communities where we operate. Everyone should go home at the end of the day, safe and sound."

The Safe Employer Award is the second safety achievement the Weyburn oil facility has celebrated in the last year. In November, staff reached a significant milestone - 20 years without an employee lost-time incident.

"The selection committee had a very difficult time narrowing it down to three nominees, let alone picking the winner," said Phil Germain, Saskatchewan Workers' Compensation Board Vice President of Prevention. "Cenovus has done a great job of creating a culture that truly values worker health and safety. This was the key reason why Cenovus won the 2014 Safe Employer Award."

Cenovus strives to foster a safety-conscience culture, both on and off the job. The company has created a number of campaigns to remind workers to keep safety as a first thought, and also provides information to staff on practicing safety at home. Recognizing that many incidents occur while workers are on the road, Cenovus also provides information on driving safely through its Cenovus in Motion initiative.

WorkSafe Saskatchewan is a partnership between the Saskatchewan Ministry of Labour Relations & Workplace Safety and the Saskatchewan Workers' Compensation Board. It is founded on the belief that all workplace injuries are predictable and preventable, and provides resources, information and support to help employers and workers achieve Mission: Zero - zero injuries, zero fatalities and zero suffering.
