Changes made to school year for the fall

For the 2013-2014 school year Cornerstone School Division decided to make changes in order to meet the requirements set forth by the provincial government.

For the 2013-2014 school year Cornerstone School Division decided to make changes in order to meet the requirements set forth by the provincial government. Each year the school year calendar is decided upon to meet requirements set forth under the Education Act.

This year with changes being made to the legislation schools needed to decide on the best possible model available to them. Different options had been discussed amongst those in education in order to meet the minimum 950 hours of instructional time.

One of the changes made includes schools unable to begin before the Labour Day long weekend. Another change has come in the form of the elimination of the February Reading Break. This has led to 190 total instruction days. Students will still have their Christmas Break in December and Spring Break in March as well as seven non-instructional days interspersed throughout the year.

The amendments made were done to ensure consistency of education across the province. This particular calendar was chosen out of a few different options as it was seen to be the best model for increasing instructional time while creating a more productive student.

April Bent, Communications Officer with Cornerstone School Division, explained that the decision was made after consulting with stakeholders as to the best route possible for the school to take in meeting the newly designated 950 hours of instructional time.
